Metal-free dental crowns restore teeth back to their normal shape, size, and function. At Crestview Dental Care, we use tooth-colored crowns made of dental porcelain, which is matched to the shade and color of your other natural teeth to allow it to blend in with your smile. In the past, dental crowns have been made with metal on the inside to add durability and strength. Modern dentistry now provides tooth-colored material such as zirconia that prevents the unsightly discoloration around the tooth. Crestview Dental Care is proud to offer metal-free dental crowns as a restorative treatment option. Our dentists Dr. Tommy Spears, Dr. Jake Goza, and Dr. Nia Zacharia each spend over 200 hours per year in ongoing education to provide our patients with the most advanced dental restoration options available.
What is the purpose of a dental crown?
Generally speaking, a crown is installed to replace the exterior of a tooth. By doing so, total tooth loss is prevented.
Common reasons why a patient needs a crown include:
- To cover a brittle tooth that has too large of a cavity for a filling or an inlay/onlay to repair
- As the last stage of a root canal procedure
- To cover a tooth that is misshapen, weak, short, or brittle
- As the final step in the installation of a dental implant
- To cover a stained or traumatized tooth that does not respond well to whitening methods
- To cover and strengthen a fractured or broken tooth
- To replace the exterior of a tooth after the failure of another restoration such as a large dental filling
What can I expect when getting a dental crown?
First, a local anesthetic is administered, making sure that you do not feel any discomfort. Next, the dentist will remove any damaged or unhealthy portion of the tooth structure, and then thoroughly clean the tooth. Next, we take impressions of your tooth using our state-of-the-art digital imaging system. These digital impressions are transmitted to our premier dental laboratory, where your crown will be custom-made out of beautiful dental porcelain. Finally, a temporary crown is made and placed on your tooth, right in our office. The temporary crown will stay in place until your permanent crown has been made.
You will return for a second visit to have your crown permanently placed over your tooth. The porcelain used to fabricate your crown is durable, stain-resistant, and has a similar translucency to natural tooth enamel. Following the procedure, your newly crowned tooth will look, feel, and function like your other natural healthy teeth. No one will be able to tell that you have a crown. Caring for your teeth after a dental crown is easy, brush and floss as normal, and follow through with your routine checkups and cleanings.
