What is cosmetic bonding?

This procedure uses a composite material that is tooth-colored to repair a variety of dental issues, including:

  • Chipped or slightly broken teeth
  • Discolored teeth that do not respond to whitening treatments
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Misshapen teeth (teeth that appear too short, twisted or oddly shaped)
  • Tooth sensitivity (from receding gums)
  • Make crooked teeth appear straight (without braces)

What are the beneFits of dental bonding?

There are two major advantages of receiving a bonding treatment: cost and convenience. Unlike porcelain veneers that cost more and require a lab to fabricate, the bonding material is applied right at our dental office and can be completed during a single appointment. A dental bonding procedure saves you time, since there is no need for a lab to create the material, and you can walk out of our office with the results you desire. The procedure can be completed in one visit and takes only about one hour to complete. No repeat visits to achieve results! Bonding is also a cost-effective way to improve your smile, as the composite material used is less expensive than materials, such as porcelain, that is used in other cosmetic procedures.

The procedure

The cosmetic dental bonding procedure begins with a treatment plan in which either Dr. Tommy Spears, Dr. Jake Goza, or Dr. Nia Zacharia will discuss with you which of your teeth would benefit from dental bonding. Once the procedure begins, your teeth will need to be buffed to remove a small portion of the tooth. The purpose of this step is to help create a surface for the material to bond. Then, a special conditioning liquid is brushed on your teeth, which also aids in the bonding process.

The bonding material is color-matched to the shade of your surrounding natural teeth, allowing your bonding treatment to blend in with your smile. One of our Knoxville cosmetic dentists then will bond the composite material to your tooth, meticulously applying the composite in layers. The resin will be shaped and molded to make the material look like a perfectly natural tooth. A special light is used to set the material. Then, our dentist will smooth the tooth or teeth being treated, giving it a final polish.

After the procedure

Caring for your teeth after a cosmetic dental bonding procedure is important. Be sure to brush, floss, and visit the dentist for your regular check-ups and cleanings every six months as recommended by the American Dental Association. Make your dental hygiene a priority, and the results of your new smile will be impeccable.
